Using your sling safely
The safety of your child is paramount to us and all of our products are manufactured to the highest standards. As with all baby carriers, your baby's safety is your responsibility. You must read and understand the instructions before using your sling to carry your baby (practicing with a doll first may help). The following are recommendations for safe use, however as with all baby products common sense must also be used at all times.
Safety recommendations:
- You must always ensure that your baby has adequate airflow, especially if they have fallen asleep or are breastfeeding. This is particularly important for very small or very young babies or if you have large breasts or a larger frame.
- You must ensure that your baby's airway is straight and that their chin is not resting on their chest, as this will impede their air flow.
- Ensure that your baby's face is never completely covered by the fabric or pressed into the fabric in a way that may restrict breathing.
- Dress your baby appropriately for temperature control and do not allow them to become overheated. Again this is particularly important for smaller or younger babies.
- If your baby is unwell or premature, seek medical advice before carrying your baby in the sling.
- Before EVERY use of the sling, check all stitching, rings and the integrity of the fabric, paying particular attention to stress points for any signs of wear or damage and only use the sling if it is safe to do so. Do not use if it is damaged or worn.
- The slings are designed to carry a child up to 35lbs and children over this weight should not be carried in the sling.
- Never cook or handle hot items such as drinks etc whilst carrying your baby.
- The sling is not intended to be used in sports e.g. jogging. cycling etc
- The sling should not be used as a car seat.
- Keep your baby away from heat sources when using the sling.
- Remember to be careful and aware of your baby/ child's position when in the sling. E.g. when going through doorways and around bends etc be aware that their head/ legs may extend beyond your body.
- Always hold your baby when bending over or moving quickly and until you are confident using the sling.
- If your child does not want to be in the sling and resists then wait for another time and do not carry them in the sling.
- When using the back carry position always be aware of your child and frequently check their positioning.
- Freedom Slings know that babywearing is enjoyable, safe and has many benefits for both the baby and the wearer but carrying your baby/child safely is your responsibility.
- You must use proper supervision, common sense and follow both the instructions and safety recommendations as Freedom Slings will not accept responsibility for any improper use.
